We are extremely excited to tell you that the Northwood Nightjars emerged victorious for yet another year. The Cape Island Cup is again sitting right where is should be; in the Northwood Center here in Cape May Point. Not only were we able to walk away with “The Cup” we had an excellent day of birding to boot!

The Steiner/CMBO Northwood Nightjars would like to thank our Corporate Sponsor Steiner Binoculars, and all of our pledge sponsors for your most generous donations in support of www.BirdCapemay.org. We raised over $2,300 towards the implementation and operation of CMBO's new website!

WSB 2007 Scrapbook

Scanning the rips

“Gearing up for the WSB is almost as much fun as the Big Day. It was a slow build up during scouting, meaning the area was sparse on birds, even for Cape May. However, it only made our drive stronger and heightened our determination. Unlike the preceding weeks, the winds shifted just in time and migrants arrived on the eve of the Big Day. It was magical." -Laura Guerard, Cape May, NJ

Waiting...patiently...

"C'mon, just call once and we'll be gone..."

Rea's Farm/ the "Beanery"

"The highlights for me included: two Bay-breasted Warblers, the male Cerulean Warbler singing and seen at Higbee’s, the Grey-cheeked Thrush at the campground, the Cape May Warbler in a yard on Cape May Point!, the fly-over American Bittern, the flyby Tri-colored Heron and the Mississippi Kite at the Beanery (Rea’s Farm)" -Jared Parks, Cambridge, MD

Jason attempts a quick bath while Dan chooses higher ground.

"Our secret spot where we hoped to hear a calling Least Bittern or a rail was a long walk through fields and woods. We emerged from the woods and into a field where we startled a few sleeping horses. I probably don’t have to say that we were just as startled as they were. I think we were all a little nervous (remember its pitch black) and we suddenly went from walking single file to forming a tight pack as we began to cross the field. A few moments later we heard movement behind us and Jason’s flashlight revealed a dozen or so horses walking a couple feet behind us. This is when things got funny (at least to me) and when I realized what Jason had been in a former life, a cowboy. The next thing we heard was Jason yelling heehaw or something like that. A couple of heehaws later the horses hadn’t budged (maybe he wasn’t a good cowboy)..." -Dan Small, Chestertown, MD

"Honk if you love shorebirds!"

Due to closures, we scanned the Meadows from the road.

Coast Guard Base

"What other goodies had been found by other teams? We knew we had found a few, such as the somewhat out of place (date-wise) Harlequin Duck at the Coast Guard Base..." -Jason Guerard, Cape May, NJ

Sunset at Pond Creek Marsh

"...with 24 species of warblers including a Cerulean, it was one of the best birding days of my life. Win or lose it comes down to raising awareness and funds for worthy causes, and sharing a passion with good friends." -Zach Parks, Chestertown, MD
