April 2009: Isobel Wayrick
A keen interest in nature photography was sparked during a trip to Antarctica in 1995. Although I was photographically ill equipped with an inexpensive, small point-and-shoot camera, the sheer grandeur of the scenery and amazing wildlife transcended even the poor equipment, and provided inspiration to acquire bigger and better cameras in an attempt to capture all the beauty in nature that my eyes could see. For the next ten years I read everything I could about photography, attended numerous workshops, and sought mentors to help in my quest. I traveled extensively to truly beautiful places, and by 2005 I recognized that new technology—digital equipment and software—could bring my images to a higher level of realism and satisfaction.
My vision is to be a wildlife artist with a camera, capturing portraits and action in the right light with beautiful compositions and timing—I take the utmost delight in those brief moments of direct eye contact with the subject.
About Isobel
Isobel is a long-time resident of Pompton Plains, N.J. Her business career has centered around the plastics and electronics industries as an entrepreneur in several corporations. She has traveled extensively with her husband Jack, and his love of nature and birds sparked her interest in photography. Through Jack’s involvement, Isobel developed an association with New Jersey Audubon Society, where she currently serves as a Board member.
She finds tremendous enjoyment sharing her work with an ever-increasing audience through exhibitions, galleries, and magazines. Community is important to Isobel, too, and loves sharing images of where she lives, works, and plays—at the New Jersey Audubon Sanctuaries, Chilton Memorial Hospital, Pompton Plains Town Hall, the Pequannock Library, and through the Wayne Art Association. Through regularly published articles in Garden State Woman magazine she shares her travel experiences and photographs with all NJ residents.
As a charter member of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Isobel is proud that her images have been included every year in their juried magazine, Expressions. She feels that it’s a challenge, and honor, to be competing against the world’s finest nature photographers. Winning awards is not her goal, but does indeed find it rewarding when her work gains special recognition.
